Before you buy full-size headphones, read this

While there are many types of full-size (circumaural) or earpad (supra-aural) headphones, for this blog I’m going to compare an open-back headphone from Grado, a SR225i ($200), with a closed-back headphone from Phiaton, the PS 500 ($299).

  

Sure, other manufacturers make open- and closed-back (aka sealed) headphones, but generalizations about the sound of the two types hold up pretty well. DJs, musicians, and recording engineers generally prefer closed headphones because they seal the wearer’s ears, limiting how much sound they hear from the world around them, and at the same time, people close to the person wearing the headphones don’t hear very much sound “leaking” from the headphones. So closed ‘phones are great to wear in bed. Isolation from external sound isn’t as effective as a noise-canceling headphone, but the closed-back headphone doesn’t use batteries to power the noise-canceling circuitry. And closed-back headphones tend to make a lot more bass than similarly priced open-back designs.

The Phiaton PS 500′s outer earcups and earpads are covered with genuine black leather, and the cloth-covered cable adds a touch of luxury to the design. It’s a very comfortable and beautifully built headphone.

With an open-back headphone, like the Grado SR225i, you hear external sound quite clearly. This is a good thing if you ever want to listen on the street. Anyone near you will hear some of the sound of the Grado. Bass may not have the weight of a closed-back design, but the bass quality and definition are clearer than most closed-back designs. Open-back headphones tend to be directed to the audiophile market, but that’s not to say there aren’t closed models that appeal to audiophiles. For me, the biggest sonic difference is spatial: closed headphones make a sound that’s “inside the head,” and open models are literally more open, so they sound a bit more like speakers. The better closed headphones exhibit less of the inside-the-head quality, but they sound less open than the very best open headphone models.

So I hesitate to say one type is better than the other; it depends on what you’re looking for from a headphone. I’m an audiophile so I prefer open headphones, but there are lots of folks who own both types and use them as needed.

My full CNET review of the Grado SR225i will be posted soon, but for now I’ll say the Grado is a very detailed sounding headphone. Its open quality is hugely appealing, and it sounds “you-are-there” realistic with good quality recordings. It’s not forgiving with harsh, dynamically compressed pop and rock recordings. Bass is nicely balanced, but a bit lightweight, compared with my much more expensive Grado RS-1, and most closed headphones.

The Phiaton PS 500 is a bass champ, the low-end really kicks! Definition is very good, but the Grado is better in that regard, but the Grado’s bass feels lightweight compared to the Phiaton’s. It’s a classic closed vs. open conundrum.

From the midrange up it’s a closer contest; that’s what I thought while listening to Elton John’s “Tumbleweed Connection” CD. John’s vocals and the acoustic guitars were extremely present sounding over the SR225i; the PS 500 was darker toned and warmer sounding. Less immediate, and I couldn’t hear the analog tape noise over the PS 500 as I did with the SR225i. Is that a good or bad thing? That depends, if you want to hear everything in the recording, it’s bad; if you prefer a smoother, more relaxed sound that “hides” tape noise, then you’d prefer the PS 500.

These are two very different-sounding headphones, so I can’t predict which one you’d like. It comes down to preferences and whether you need an open- or closed-back headphone. The best way to know for sure is to audition them side by side; if you can’t do that, the first thing you have to do is decide if you need the isolation of a closed design, or the open quality of a Grado, Sennheiser, or another open model.

All About Guitar Amplifiers

Guitar amplifiers are electronic amplifiers specially designed to be used with electronic musical instruments.

They are mainly made in two major forms. The combination (or combo) amplifier has the amplifier head and guitar speakers in a single unit. The contains the electronic circuitry constituting the preamp, built in effects processing, and power amplifier.

In the second form, the head is detached from the speakers, and joined by cables. The separate head is normally located on top of one or more loudspeaker enclosures. This separate head when placed on top of a speaker enclosure or cabinet forms an amplifier stack or amp stack.

Instrument amplifiers Types

An extensive range of instrument amplifiers can now be used with the electrical guitar. Some are for general purpose and some designed for specific instruments and even for a definite sound. These comprise: Traditional ones which generate a clean, warm sound a sharp treble roll off at 5 kHz or less and bass roll off at 60 to 100 Hz. It has presets with built in reverb and tremolo (vibrato) units.

These types are often used by traditional rock, blues, and country musicians. Chances are that when on higher volume level the sound can get distorted. So to counter higher end bass amplifiers at times include compressor or limiter features, and an XLR DI output to patch the bass signal directly into a mixing board. To keep the bass amplifiers cool they are often provided with external metal heat sinks or fans.

Keyboard amplifiers, have a low distortion rate and also to make things easy for its functioning it has a simple onboard mixer. This assists the keyboardists to control the tone and level of several keyboards.

Acoustic guitar amplifiers are intended solely to produce a clean, transparent, acoustic sound when being used with acoustic instruments with built in transducer pickups and microphones.

In addition to a 1 by 4 inch input jack, some bear an additional input jack for inserting microphone. This is known easily as it will use a three pin XLR connector. Conversely, phantom power, which is not a necessary for lower end amplifiers, is often provided with the high end versions, so that musicians can use condenser microphones.

Vacuum tube guitar amplifier circuit is rather uncomplicated. Two triodes are used in the preamplifier section for obtaining a high signal level to implement any tone controls and drive the following sections. Two more triodes split the phase of the signal and drive the final pentode or beam tetrode (kinkless tetrodes) tubes of the push pull power amplifier stage.

Solid state guitar amplifiers commonly have the quickest response time, even more so than modeling amps. Tubes tend to create warm overdrive sounds instead of cutting the peaked signal off. They more or less pull the peaked audio information back (like natural compression) which creates a fuzzy overdrive sound.

Modeling guitar amplifiers are used to simulate sounds of well known cabinets, guitar amps, and effects. Digital processing is done to obtain this, although there are prevalence analog modeling amps as well, like the Tech 21 Sansamp. Modeling amps characteristically output a wide range of tones and effects, and offers cabinet simulation, which aids the recording without a microphone.

LED Lighting Tests

LED lighting for reef tanks is on its way to becoming a reality. Different LED fixtures address the lighting problem in several different ways, small number of high power LEDs with optics or with large numbers of low power LEDs with no optics.

The last article reported test results on some LED fixtures [http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2010/2/aafeature2] and their comparison to other lighting technologies. This article continues in the same vein and presents results on lighting output for some more LED fixtures available in the market. Table 1 presents a list of the LED lighting fixtures reviewed in this article. Each of these was tested using the same set up as my previous reflector tests, using a 3′X3′ grid with a spacing of 3″ in the X,Y direction. The fixtures were centered on this grid, and PAR was measured as PPFD (Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density) in micromoles/m2/sec using a LICOR 1000 data logger and a LI-192SA underwater cosine corrected sensor calibrated for both air and water. The data logger was set to average 5 readings for each data collection point. The data was imported into Microsoft Excel for analysis and the data was plotted to display the light spread and intensity at various distances. 4 plots of the data with 2 plots at each distance were generated showing:

  • A 3-D surface plot showing the actual PAR values recorded
  • A contour plot viewing the surface from the top showing the distribution

The LED fixtures tested fall into 2 separate categories – ones using fewer high power LEDs (Aquaillumination) and ones using large numbers of low powered LEDs (Eco-Lamps KR-91, Blue Moon Aquatics and Panorama). The low powered LEDs were tested at 18″ and 24″, while the high power ones were tested at 24″ and 30″.

While PAR values are are not the only things that we should be concerned about when purchasing an LED fixture, they are certainly the first criteria that must be met when selecting any lighting system. Additionally, more specifically with LED systems there are a host of other criteria that must be considered. While these criteria are more subjective and easily swayed by user preferences and values, this article focuses primarily on the light output and distribution.

How to Make Your Homemade Speaker Box Sound the Best

    Cut the fiberglass sheeting to exactly what the software requires. For precision sound, you must be precise about your measurements.

    Fit all of the sides together except the face, using an all-purpose glue. Any high-quality glue or epoxy found in a hardware store that works on fiberglass is good.

    Cut a layer of fiberglass insulation to fit in the bottom of the box and lay it down inside. This will help improve the response of your speaker.

    MEMS microphone measures two millimeters square

    PORTLAND, Ore. — What is touted as the world’s smallest analog microphone fits into a package as much as four times smaller than existing analog microphones, according to developer Akustica Inc. (Pittsburgh). The 2-mm2 chip houses a 1-mm2 MEMS microphone die that the company announced last year. The newly packaged chip can be mounted alone or in arrays of two or more for sophisicated acoustic processing. Davin Yuknis, vice president of marketing and product management, claimed the MEMS device is “so small that you can put three or four of our analog silicon microphones in the same space as a single conventional mic.” Akustica’s digital microphones are used by PC makers on high-end models like Fujitsu’s LifeBook. The primary markets for miniature microphones, however, is mobile handsets and Bluetooth headsets, where digital microphones are not yet being used. Akustica said its analog MEMS microphone also features lower power than conventional mics, drawing only 140 microwatts in typical applications without sacrificing quality. It also delivers 42 dB sensitivity and a signal-to-noise ratio of 58 dB. “We expect many headset and handset designers to be switching to digital mics, but for now the biggest trend we see is designers using multiple analog microphones in the same space as their single-mic designs,” said Mark Nave, Akustica’s product marketing manager. Akustica has yet to announce design wins for its analog microphone, but has distributed samples to several customers which it expects to name soon. “Early adopters” of Akustica’s microphones “are Bluetooth headset manufacturers,” said marketing director Marcie Weinstein. “Cellphones won’t be far behind–there, it’s getting to be more about dual microphone handsets.” Multiple microphones used in arrays could enable noise cancellation and beam-steering of microphone pickup pattern. Those capabilities are being design into high-end headsets and handsets.
