Open- and closed-back (aka sealed) headphones

While there are many types of full-size (circumaural) or earpad (supra-aural) headphones, for this blog I’m going to compare an open-back headphone from Grado, a SR225i ($200), with a closed-back headphone from Phiaton, the PS 500 ($299).

Sure, other manufacturers make open- and closed-back (aka sealed) headphones, but generalizations about the sound of the two types hold up pretty well. DJs, musicians, and recording engineers generally prefer closed headphones because they seal the wearer’s ears, limiting how much sound they hear from the world around them, and at the same time, people close to the person wearing the headphones don’t hear very much sound “leaking” from the headphones. So closed ‘phones are great to wear in bed. Isolation from external sound isn’t as effective as a noise-canceling headphone, but the closed-back headphone doesn’t use batteries to power the noise-canceling circuitry. And closed-back headphones tend to make a lot more bass than similarly priced open-back designs.

The Phiaton PS 500′s outer earcups and earpads are covered with genuine black leather, and the cloth-covered cable adds a touch of luxury to the design. It’s a very comfortable and beautifully built headphone.

With an open-back headphone, like the Grado SR225i, you hear external sound quite clearly. This is a good thing if you ever want to listen on the street. Anyone near you will hear some of the sound of the Grado. Bass may not have the weight of a closed-back design, but the bass quality and definition are clearer than most closed-back designs. Open-back headphones tend to be directed to the audiophile market, but that’s not to say there aren’t closed models that appeal to audiophiles. For me, the biggest sonic difference is spatial: closed headphones make a sound that’s “inside the head,” and open models are literally more open, so they sound a bit more like speakers. The better closed headphones exhibit less of the inside-the-head quality, but they sound less open than the very best open headphone models.

So I hesitate to say one type is better than the other; it depends on what you’re looking for from a headphone. I’m an audiophile so I prefer open headphones, but there are lots of folks who own both types and use them as needed.

My full CNET review of the Grado SR225i will be posted soon, but for now I’ll say the Grado is a very detailed sounding headphone. Its open quality is hugely appealing, and it sounds “you-are-there” realistic with good quality recordings. It’s not forgiving with harsh, dynamically compressed pop and rock recordings. Bass is nicely balanced, but a bit lightweight, compared with my much more expensive Grado RS-1, and most closed headphones.

The Phiaton PS 500 is a bass champ, the low-end really kicks! Definition is very good, but the Grado is better in that regard, but the Grado’s bass feels lightweight compared to the Phiaton’s. It’s a classic closed vs. open conundrum.

From the midrange up it’s a closer contest; that’s what I thought while listening to Elton John’s “Tumbleweed Connection” CD. John’s vocals and the acoustic guitars were extremely present sounding over the SR225i; the PS 500 was darker toned and warmer sounding. Less immediate, and I couldn’t hear the analog tape noise over the PS 500 as I did with the SR225i. Is that a good or bad thing? That depends, if you want to hear everything in the recording, it’s bad; if you prefer a smoother, more relaxed sound that “hides” tape noise, then you’d prefer the PS 500.

These are two very different-sounding headphones, so I can’t predict which one you’d like. It comes down to preferences and whether you need an open- or closed-back headphone. The best way to know for sure is to audition them side by side; if you can’t do that, the first thing you have to do is decide if you need the isolation of a closed design, or the open quality of a Grado, Sennheiser, or another open model.

Watch Digital TV Using a DVB T Antenna

You have to take action in order to watch digital TV if you are reliant on the old school analog signal.

Several countries generally among the European countries are experiencing transformations in the national TV broadcasting signal right now. The trend is to renew the old school analog television transmission and this conversion is concerning many TV users who are required to adapt to keep on enjoying Tv. The analog signal was a single frequency broadcasting while the new digital platform is based on a discrete terrestrial solution allowing high quality (high definition) sound and pictures. The modern DVB (Digital Video Broadcasting) signal is broadcast in either the MPEG2 or MPEG4 technology where MPEG4 is the newest.

A transformation in broadcasting signal, nonetheless, can’t be easily done. It requires a great deal of physical and technical modifications on the back end, but the most comprehensive consequence actually concerns the television audience who are required to do something in order to observe the digital TV.

This publication will help you figure out if you will have to do something and which choices there are available.

First of all, who is affected?

- Those making use of an outdated antenna.

If you can count yourself amongst those, here is what you can (have to) do to update your television transmission and complete the process of a TV revolution:

1. Buy a satellite package! This might be one of the most radical actions you can take, but might also be the smartest. After buying a satellite DVB T Antenna you are no longer reliant on any transmission changes, actually, you will not ever again have to worry about it. A satellite signal is something very different and independent so when the national television firm decides to update its system within the nearest future you will not be affected. Using a satellite, also gives you a wider selection of channels, where you can choose from a larger selection of TV channels.

2. Shifting to a cable dependent TV system. Though this alternative often times is limited to people who live in larger building blocks with inbuilt solutions. This option would resolve your problem.

3. Fibernet. This may not be an option for the majority, but certainly a supreme alternative.

4. Broadband. use your broadband IP connection as the television broadcasting connection. This platform is digital in nature and it is actually possible to use it on your TV.

5. Acquire a modernized plasma television. The majority of the new televisions have inbuilt digital tuners; the only thing you have to be aware of is if they are MPEG4 ready. If they simply support MPEG2 you might have to upgrade again later on with an external adapter.

6. Internet TV. It is something many are unaware of, but you are able to follow tons of TV channels online? Plenty of national TV brands also publish live on the web.

7. Quit the TV! This is likely not the first choice for most of the TV audience, but is mentioned here to express the seriousness of the matter. If you do not react you WILL lose your TV signal. It is not similar to the old days when a bad signal ended with hazy pictures, the modern days are cruel|harsh|ruthless|merciless], now it is everything or nothing.

8. Purchase a DVB T Tuner. This option is the natural solution for a majority of people in many places. The DVB T Tuner abbreviated from Digital Video Broadcasting Terrestrial is an external television transmission tuner, permitting old TVs to show high definition images. This solution does not need any fancy antenna or expensive gear, the DVB T tuner is a little container you plug in to and position besides your television and you are good to go. This is therefore the cheapest alternative for a majority of people. The only drawback is that you need a DVB T tuner for every television in the family.

We hope you could use the information given and that you are now better suited to take a well informed decision. The single thing left for you to do is to take action and solve this minor problem before you are met with a black display.

Digital TV
Digital TV is the new version of television, but Watch Digital TV need use a DVB T Antenna.

Ultimate Ears Launches New UE by Logitech Headphones

We have recently reviewed a pair of Ultimate Ears and were very satisfied with their overall quality along with their giving back to the community. They recently gave away 1000 pairs of their UE700 headphones which have an MSRP of $149. Needless to say, that was a pretty selfless thing of them to do. They now have come around and launched a series of 3 new affordable headsets.

These headsets range from $29.99 MSRP to $79.99 MSRP hitting the replacement headphone market on the head. Many people look to replace their stock headphones with something a little better without breaking the bank. Because of this, many companies have filled this space with a series of copies of each other’s products all derived from a simple ODM design that has been stamped and re-labeled dozens of times. This has recently been detailed by the expose called the secret scam of cheap earbuds. As such, Ultimate Ears offers a higher quality alternative to this approach and gives their customers the expected service even on a product that is only $29.99 as opposed to their pinnacle of $1,350. Ultimate Ears is a company that is used by artists and sound engineers across the industry and as such, they have the expertise in delivering the best quality audio. And as they continue to innovate, they are able to deliver better quality audio at a lower cost across their range of products as they have shown with each successive series of products.

The three mainly new lines of products they’ve launched are the UE 500 series which are available in a standard headphone design or a headset design for use with an iPhone or Blackberry. They also come with the standard expected 5 soft ear cushions along with the memory foam comply tips which we find to be the most comfortable and noise cancelling. Everyone we’ve spoken with is in love with these foam tips. These also come with a no tangle cord which is probably a product of UE’s synthesis with their parent company Logitech[LOGI] who is famous for their no tangle cords among other product innovations and customer service.

Next come the UE 350 series which there is only one model of but are designed specifically to boost bass. So if you’re into deeper bass and listen to music that requires better bass, these headphones should be for you. The UE 350s also come with the hard case to keep them nice and safe while working out at the gym or putting them in your pocket on the run. They are also designed to be sweat resistant with quite a lot of rubber so they are specifically targeted towards people who want to use them at the gym. Although, there is no mention of there being any foam comply cushions, which is a little saddening, but again these are also significantly less expensive than all of the other products UE offers.

Bringing up the bottom is the UE 200 series which come in two models, one being a headset [pictured right] and the other being headphones. The headset model, just like all other UE series products are denoted by the vi suffix to indicate voice capability. The UE 200’s also come in three colors, Black, Blue, and Pink and just like the 350 series are also designed to be sweat resistant and workout friendly.

The suggested retail prices for the Ultimate Ears 200, Ultimate Ears 350 and Ultimate Ears 500 are $29.99 (U.S.), $49.99 (U.S.) and $69.99 (U.S.) respectively. If you’re interested in a headset for your iPhone or Blackberry, the suggested retail prices for the Ultimate Ears 200vi Noise-Isolating Headset and Ultimate Ears 500vi Noise-Isolating Headset are $39.99 (U.S.) and $79.99 (U.S.) respectively. All of the new Ultimate Ears earphones and headsets are expected to be available in the U.S. in September.

New Balance Launch Sports Earphones

In what seems like a direct response to this year’s partnership between Sennheiser and Adidas, iHome today announced a new partnership with New Balance, the athletic products manufacturer. The unlikely marriage has resulted in three headphone pairs that make up the New Balance Sport Headphone line.

Three different designs were created for three different exercise needs. The NB439 earbuds have removable ear-hooks and detachable cables of varying lengths. If you prefer headphones, the foldable NB447 sits on the ears but also features the interchangeable cables, as well as an in-line player remote for iPhones and iPods. Finally, the NB467 is a behind-the-neck model, also with interchangeable cable lengths.

Look for the New Balance iHome headphone collaboration to hit stores in limited release later this year, with a wide release in 2011. The NB467 will sell for $24.99, the NB439 for $34.99 and the NB447 for $34.99—all prices well below the Sennheiser CX 680′s $120 price tag.

talk about the Vintage Microphones

Vintage microphones are one of the collections of microphones that were used in the olden days. Vintage microphones may be listed in chronological order based on the models: carbon microphones which came into being in 1878; the 394 condenser microphone introduced by Western Electric; the 4AA condenser mic introduced by Radio Corporation of America (RCA); the 618A introduced by Western Electric; the 630A developed again by Western Electric; the cardiod microphones developed by Siemens; the tubular microphone designed by Bell labs; the 44A, B, and BX velocity ribbon microphones developed by Harry F. Olson at RCA; the 77A , B, C, D, and DX unidirectional ribbon series; the 639A and 639B introduced by Western Electric. These systems are the various vintage microphones. These vintage microphones are in high demand and therefore are very costly. People who could not afford it went in for the microphones bearing assorted brand names that surfaced in the American market. They were RCA type 77 models but with different crystal elements. Prices for these microphones are usually ranged around $15 to $30.

Vintage microphones are used for the purpose of intensifying weak sounds, by transforming sound waves into the electrical pulses. The year 1878 marked the beginning of carbon microphones. Vintage microphones are developed in various models and with varied features. Berliner and Edison filed for patents on carbon microphone. In the year 1910, E.Wente developed condenser microphones at Bell labs. By the mid 1920′s, developments in condenser microphones made it possible to record films. The omni directional dynamic microphone was developed by Wente and Thuras in the late 1920′s. Omni directional dynamic mikes were invented in the late 1930′s. From then on, there have been several advancements in microphones. The equipments that were heavy and bulky have become lightweight and handy now.

Microphone parts and accessories are also available for collection purposes. Some companies specialize in reproduction of these rare accessories. Like other areas there are spurious manufactures in the field of vintage microphones too. One must be choosy while buying vintage microphones from markets.

AKG Perception 120 USB Microphone

How Does It Work?
For those wondering, the technology inside the Perception 120 USB is actually fairly impressive. AKG has long offered a standard condenser Perception 120 microphone, but it differs from the USB model in a few ways. The original model, just like any condenser microphone on the market, is analog technology. It sports a 3-pin XLR connector and requires a powered mixer for use. Getting audio onto a computer requires an RCA to 3.5mm cable or a XLR-to-USB solution such as the one Shure offers.

On the other hand, the Perception 120 USB model features an analog-to-digital converter inside. While the extra components do make the body somewhat heavier, it offers a few advantages for those trying to cut costs and simplify their setup. Without the need of any extra equipment, the Perception 120 USB connects directly to a computer’s USB port for power and transmits audio back simultaneously. And for those wondering, it’s quite similar to the concept behind the Blue Microphones Snowball, we reviewed last year. This is AKG’s first digital USB-enabled micophone, but it is already pretty impressive.

Audio Quality
When it comes to talking about audio quality, I should disclose something quite important: I’m not an expert. But here’s what I can tell you. As someone who creates video and audio recordings from time to time, I’ve used many microphones. Just for reference, this includes everything from the one that comes built-into a laptop’s bezel, a cheap 3.5 mm solution, a wired headset, a wireless Bluetooth one, and even ones inside external webcams. But more importantly, for a comparison, I’ve also heavily used the Snowball and PG-27USB. After extensive use, one thing is clear, this is one of the best microphones I’ve used. While this might be fairly entry-level for some professionals, this is probably better than anything you already own.

Finding the appropriate levels for optimal quality isn’t difficult. There are only two switches on the front to enable a bass-cut filter and an attenuation pad. The bass-cut filter reduces disturbances from mechanical vibrations and wind noise while the attenuation pad drops gain for close-up use and instruments. In a fairly quiet room with minimal audible disturbances, I found the microphone sounding the best from about 2 feet away with both the extra settings disabled.

I recorded bits of audio from the Snowball and this microphone to find the results astounding. While the Snowball was my favorite USB microphone of choice for sometime, it too picks up a hint of background noise and rumbling sounds from my computer. I also found the Snowball chopping off at highs quicker, turning them into faint hisses. On the other hand, the AKG Perception was immune to breathing sounds, static, pops, and vibrations. After playing back just a few seconds of recordings, the differences were clear: AKG’s microphone sounded significantly better.

To further put my claims to the test, I had a few others blindly pick when I sounded best by switching between microphones during a Skype conference call. They all picked the AKG for the best sounding audio every time. Considering that it managed to isolate and eliminate just about any background noise aside from my voice, it’s pretty impressive. Although above the price range of a microphone that the average person would consider, this is great for those taking their first step into professional audio.

However, there’s one thing this microphone lacks: a built-in monitor. Shure’s PG27-USB, while not too much more expensive, lets users directly plug a pair of earphones into the microphone. While it’s not something everyone needs, a zero-latency monitor is simply one of the easiest ways to fine tune a microphone to make sure that everything sounds right without having to check the output from another source.
